What "specialty coffee" actually means?
The term gets used loosely, so it’s worth being precise about it. Specialty coffee is a graded category: the Specialty Coffee Association scores green (unroasted) beans on a 100-point scale, and anything 80 and above qualifies as specialty grade. Most supermarket coffee sits below that line. The beans poured at The Back Room score 86 and above.
That number isn’t decoration, it reflects the farm’s altitude, soil, harvest timing and processing method, all the way through to the roast. It’s a proxy for how much care went into the coffee before it ever reached a cup.
The other marker is that specialty coffee is almost always single-origin: every bean in the bag comes from one farm or one cooperative, rather than a blend assembled from dozens of sources for a flat, consistent flavour. Single-origin is why a cup can taste like stone fruit, black tea or nougat without anything being added, that character is already in the bean.

Why The Barn Berlin
The Back Room works exclusively with The Barn, a Berlin-based roaster that sources directly from small-scale farmers and pays above market rate for the coffee it buys. The point of that relationship isn’t a name to drop, it’s traceability. Every coffee on the menu can be tied to a specific farm or cooperative, and baristas can tell you where it came from and how it was processed if you ask.

We’re a specialty coffee shop in Tirana serving single origin beans roasted by The Barn Berlin – one of Europe’s most respected specialty roasters. Our espresso menu runs from a classic espresso to flat white, cortado, and latte macchiato. We also brew V60 pour over and cold brew using rotating single origin filter beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, and Colombia.
Yes. We offer plant-based milk for all coffee drinks. Our Vegan Loaf is made in-house daily and is completely plant-based. Most of our menu is vegan-friendly or can be adapted – just ask your barista.

We’re one of the only specialty coffee shops in Tirana working exclusively with a world-class European roaster – The Barn Berlin. Every bean we use is single origin and traceable to a specific farm or cooperative. Beyond the coffee, The Back Room was built by two friends who cared deeply about creating a space that feels genuinely good to be in. That care shows in every detail, from the way we brew to the way the room feels.
We serve a selection of in-house desserts daily – including cookies, cheesecake, and a vegan loaf. We also offer matcha, chai latte, turmeric latte, organic hot chocolate, kombucha, and fresh orange juice alongside our full coffee menu.
